Michelle Ogunwole, MD is an internal medicine physician with advanced training in quality improvement and patient safety science. She is currently a general internal medicine research fellow and PhD candidate at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg school of public health. Dr. Ogunwole’ s research is focused on racial disparities in maternal health among African American women with a specific interest in African American women's experience within the healthcare system and barriers to follow up after pregnancy. Her clinical work focuses on managing chronic disease in the preconception period as well as the postpartum period, particularly for women with medically complicated pregnancies that confer elevated future cardiovascular risk. Her quality improvement efforts center around transitions of care from obstetrics to primary care for historically marginalized populations who experience medically complicated pregnancies. She continually highlights racism as a patient safety issues that hospital systems should work to address. Dr. Ogunwole also advocates for policy initiatives to improve women’s health and reduce disparities in maternal health outcomes. She works with legislators to think about innovative interventions to improve maternal health for vulnerable populations, including leveraging technology to improve access to care, reimbursement for doulas and other community health workers involved in pregnancy and postpartum care, and expansion of Medicaid coverage for women of childbearing age.
