Mariah E. Johnson is a Senior Manager on the Hepatitis and Policy and Legislative Affairs teams at the National Alliance of State & Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD). She coordinates hepatitis policy and program activities, implements NASTAD’s hepatitis related appropriations and legislative agenda, and coordinates the Hepatitis Appropriations Partnership through which she successfully led advocacy efforts to increase the FY2016 budget of the Division of Viral Hepatitis at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She also helped to lead organization of the inaugural Hepatitis on the Hill advocacy event in 2015.
Prior to joining NASTAD, Mariah served as Senior Legislative Assistant to Congresswoman Barbara Lee. Her portfolio included the Budget Committee, Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and health policy broadly, with focus on health equity, disparities, reproductive health and sex education. She worked to advance the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) Health Care Task Force policy agenda and worked closely with Tri-Caucus offices to develop and advance an agenda to reduce and eventually eliminate health disparities, expand access to quality, affordable health care for low-income and minority communities, and to maintain or increase appropriations for preventive and public health initiatives.
Mariah’s policy career began as a Kaiser Family Foundation Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholar with Congresswoman Donna M. Christensen. Mariah was raised in Northeast Oklahoma, and holds a B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Howard University, where she met her husband Steven. Mariah is also a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
