Dr. Brenda Oiyemhonlan is an Attending Emergency Medicine Physician with The Permanente Medical Group of Northern California. In additional to her clinical responsibilities, she is currently serving as the Geriatric Site Lead Physician for the Diablo Service Area (DSA) Emergency Departments. In this capacity, she has been charged with improving, streamlining, and optimizing the care of emergency department patients over the age of 65. She also serves as a liaison to TPMG geriatric emergency department regional group working to elevate and optimize care pathways for geriatric patients across the Northern California Region. At the national level, she also serves as a member of a multi-disciplinary NIH funded work group, the Geriatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network 2.0 – Advancing Dementia Care (GEAR 2.0 ADC), who is tasked with identifying current gaps and developing strategies to elevate and improve emergency care for elderly patients with neurocognitive disease, such as dementia. Her main goal, as a member of this work group, is to proactively engage the team around and bring to the forefront issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion as it relates to the recognition, referral and care coordination for racial and ethnic minority geriatric patients. Dr. Oiyemhonlan received her medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California and Master’s Degrees in Public Health and Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan, School of Public Health. She completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at Kings County Hospital and SUNY Downstate where she served as a chief resident and received several leadership and administrative awards including resident of the year. She then completed an Administration and Leadership fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Oiyemhonlan is an America’s Essential Hospital Fellow (Class of 2019-20) and a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Medicine and is also engaged with several specialty organizations including the National Medical Association and the Sinkler Miller Medical Association.
