Dr. Shanell L. McGoy is the Director of HIV/STD for the Tennessee Department of Health. She oversees a more than $65 million investment in state and federal resources to support a comprehensive HIV/STD service delivery system via Epidemiology/Surveillance, HIV Prevention, STD Prevention, Ryan White Program Part B, Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS, and Contracts/Finance. She received a B.A. in Comparative Women’s Studies from Spelman College and a MPH in Community Health Sciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago, School of Public Health. She also received a Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Following her doctoral studies, Dr. McGoy completed a Post-Doctoral Health Policy Leadership Fellowship at the Satcher Health Leadership Institute, Morehouse School of Medicine.
Dr. McGoy has many years of public health experience in both rural and urban areas across the country. She has worked in community based organizations, local, state, and federal government public health agencies. Her work on achieving health equity for vulnerable populations has been published in a variety of academic journals. Dr. McGoy currently serves as Secretary of the Southern AIDS Coalition (SAC), Vice-Chair of the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD), and is a member of the American Public Health Association (APHA). She is grateful for family, friends, and mentors who have invested in her success. In her spare time, she enjoys quilting, traveling, teaching public health professionals, and participating in community service. Dr. McGoy is originally from Peoria, Illinois and currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee.
