Captain Taara Hassan, MD

Strengthening the community and professional pipeline has been an integral part of Dr. Hassan’s life. While completing undergraduate studies in Human Biology at Stanford University (‘03), Dr. Hassan held leadership positions in Residential Education (Residential Assistant, Ujamaa African-American Theme Dorm), New Student Orientation, and the Society of Black Scientists and Engineers. From 2004-2005, Dr. Hassan was Program Coordinator for California Black Women’s Health Project (CABWHP) where she held community-based health programs, coordinated the Health Policy Summit in Sacramento, and fundraised $54K for CABWHP’s Advocate Training Program. During medical school at George Washington University (‘11), Dr. Hassan completed the Community Health Track where she served as Senior Medical Student Preceptor at Family Medical Counseling Services clinic in the Anacostia neighborhood of Southeast D.C.; additionally, Dr. Hassan partnered with Eastern High School Health Science Academy students in holding health workshops for D.C. youth. She was also Chapter President of GW’s Student National Medical Association (SNMA), which was awarded P.R.I.D.E. Chapter of the Year by the national organization. Upon graduation, she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society, recognizing “individuals who are exemplars of humanistic patient care and who can serve as role models, mentors, and leaders in medicine.”Dr. Hassan has published in a radiological textbook, peer-reviewed medical journal, and presented work at national radiological conferences. She is currently Chief Resident in Diagnostic Radiology at San Antonio Military Medical Center and Captain in the US Army. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
