LaToya Mason, M.D., originally from Jackson, Mississippi, is one of a handful of African-Americans under age 40 to have achieved the rank of Associate Professor at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). An anesthesiologist at Harris Health System (the community-owned healthcare system for the nation’s third most-populous county), she has provided quality anesthetic care to >4,200 patients comprising the pathologically diverse, indigent population that depends upon this establishment for their healthcare needs. She is a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana (Summa Cum Laude) and Tulane University School of Medicine. She completed Anesthesiology residency at Tulane and Obstetric Anesthesiology fellowship at BCM. As Director of BCM Obstetric Anesthesia Education, she has designed and implemented e-learning modalities for resident physicians and advanced practice nurses. Her educational materials have disseminated worldwide as she is Associate Editor for Shnider and Levinson’s Anesthesia for Obstetrics Textbook, 5th Edition. Dr. Mason has authored several publications in peer-reviewed media. She has been an invited lecturer, workshop instructor, and abstract presenter at numerous state and national scientific meetings. Her interests include patient safety, difficult airway management, and effects of neuraxial anesthesia on the cerebral vasculature of hypertensive pregnant women. She has received two of her institution’s most prestigious awards: Rising Star and Fulbright/Jaworski’s Faculty Excellence Award. An accomplished pianist and violinist, Dr. Mason is the first African-American to win Mississippi’s Junior Miss in the program’s 65+-year history. She aspires to continue to make a positive impact on healthcare delivery as an anesthesiologist, medical educator, and clinical researcher.
