Alita-Geri Carter

Alita-Geri Carter is a health advocate, children's book publisher and author, nurse practitioner, the CEO and Founder of The Commission for Health, and a nonprofit On the M.O.V.E. Academy, Incorporated. She has experience as an Assistant Director of Nursing Unit-Based, a Nurse Practice Educator, an Infection Prevention and Control Nurse, and an Assistant Director of Nursing, where she directed over 200 employees. She has been an electronic medical record Super User and nurse practice educator prior to her service at HRSA. Ms. Carter has worked for HRSA since 2019, managing more than 20 million dollars with federally funded recipients that support Federally Qualified Health Centers and healthcare in the United States until 2022. She is currently the co-lead for the Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training Professional Program (over $60 million dollars and 168 grant recipients). In her time at HRSA, she gained experience with grants and cooperative agreements, earned multiple performance awards, has been recognized for work done in workgroups, and received two Administrator’s awards. She operated the first School-Based Health Center in Howard County, Maryland, in 2013 and helped establish the health center.

She volunteers to raise awareness about healthcare professions with students across the globe and the nation through her work. She has reached over 790 students across 14 states, two continents, and 28 classrooms. She is the treasurer and a board member for the 5th District of the Maryland Nurses Association. She is also a member of the Learning Disability Association. Before 2022, she served as a legislative committee member for the Maryland chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. Her legislative advocacy efforts also include serving on the City of Bowie Education Committee and the formal recognition of Apraxia Awareness Month by the City of Bowie. Ms. Carter currently serves as a member of the legislative committee for the Maryland Nurses Association. She has authored numerous letters of support and opposition to support the increase of value for her community and the promotion of healthcare access and equity. A few accolades to mention are the Prince George's County Council Appreciation Award for the 2020 Black History Program, the City of Bowie Mayor's Proclamation issued by Mayor Timothy Adams in March 2021 for Distinguished Service (Education Committee), a Nomination for Top 100 Healthcare Visionaries by the International Forum on Advancements Healthcare, Maryland Nurses Association 2022 Nurse Pathfinder Award, and the 2022 Trailblazer Award from Pathful, Inc.
