Dr. Melissa Burnside is a Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician and a Fellow in the National Clinician Scholars Program at Duke University. A Bronx native with Jamaican roots, she is a proud product of the NYC Public School system. She completed her undergraduate and graduate studies in Public Health/Environmental Health at Johns Hopkins University/Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Burnside earned her MD from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed Family Medicine Residency and Chief Residency at the Residency Program in Social Medicine (RPSM) at Montefiore Medical Center in The Bronx, NY. In 2019 she was awarded the RPSM Behavioral Science Award and Outstanding Social Medicine Project Award for her contributions to racial justice and equity in medical education and clinical care.

Dr. Burnside is passionate about mentoring students of color in health careers, providing comprehensive care to vulnerable populations, and conducting health-disparities related research. She currently practices clinically at Duke Family Medicine Center in Durham, NC with a special interest in Women's Health. She plans to continue a career in academic medicine in order to engage in patient care, education, and research that will inform policy and administration on strategies and actions to achieve health equity.
