Bi Awosika, MD, FACP, SFHM is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and faculty in the Division of General Internal Medicine practicing as an academic hospitalist. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Human Biology and minor in French at Stanford University. After working as a Research Assistant exploring DNA based patents at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, she matriculated at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine, earning her Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Awosika then pursued her residency training in Internal Medicine at Boston University Medical Center, where she was asked to serve as Chief Medical Resident. She then joined as faculty at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., serving as an Academic Hospitalist in the Department of Medicine. There, her experiences included being appointed the Medical Director on a new Medical Stepdown Unit, participating in Intern Selection interviews, serving as a member of the Internal Medicine’s Clinical Competency Committee, and being a Unit Champion for the Early Discharge/Length of Stay Initiative. She has also served as Core Faculty for the year-long educational series “Learn to Teach”, dedicated to giving lectures that would equip medical residents to be effective teachers. Recognition has been given for teaching as well as the hospital’s “Associate of the Month” while fostering the hospital’s philosophy of “cura personalis”.
Her career path has then led her to her current faculty position at the University of Cincinnati while caring for patients with University of Cincinnati Health. Since the move to the Midwest, she continues to pursue her interests in hospital and educational initiatives. She serves as Chair of the Resident Clinical Competency Committee, Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, Chair of the Annual UC General Internal Medicine Updates Conference, a faculty advisor of the Minority Housestaff Association along with being a member of other hospital committees. Furthermore, she is involved in Diversity and Inclusion Task Forces and Implicit Bias Improvement Group that focus on recruitment efforts for the underrepresented in medicine and curricular educational initiatives. Her efforts have earned her both local and national recognition. While being awarded the Young Alumna Award from her high school alma mater, Dr. Awosika has been featured on MedPage Today in a national segment highlighting physician burnout, inducted in Cincinnati Business Courier’s “Forty Under 40” Class of leaders, and received recognition as a national Bizwomen Headliner.
