Luis E. Seija, MD is a resident physician in Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. His commitment to equity facilitates his capacity for leadership, which manifests at every level. As an advocate and activist, he pulls from his own experiences to help those who are living the life he once lived. Active within organized medicine, he creates spaces that center equity and look beyond performative advocacy to determine sustainable policy solutions that affect structural change. He currently sits on the AMA Minority Affairs Section (MAS) Governing Council where he engages his peers by setting an example of the multifaceted role learners and trainees play in the discussion, implementation, and continuity of equitable health policy. As the elected MAS Delegate, he notably championed the adoption of policy leading to the AMA recognizing racism as a public health threat and race as a social construct. He also maintains appointments through the American Academy of Pediatrics and Medical Society of the State of New York. Dr. Seija traveled extensively during his training, participating in medical missions and service-learning opportunities throughout Latin America and India, applying lessons learned to his own community. In medical school, he spearheaded the Aggie Health Project, a nationally recognized comprehensive Hepatitis C screening and treatment program to address gaps in available preventative services in Central Texas for Texas A&M's affiliated student-run free clinic, the first of its kind. His professional interests include leadership and resiliency development for learners and trainees of color as well as narrative medicine. His utilization of strategic narratives to promote diversity, equity, and humanism is reflected through frequent guest contributions, commentary, and media appearances, such as The Wall Street Journal, MTV, MedPage Today, and Association of American Medical Colleges. His efforts are commended across the spectrum and Dr. Seija has been the recipient of several local, state, and national awards, including the Mount Sinai Health System Resident of the Month (2021), Texas A&M University (TAMU) Accountability, Climate, & Equity Diversity Service Award (2019), TAMU Margaret C. Rudder Community Service Award (2018), American Medical Association (AMA) Excellence in Medicine Minority Scholar Award (2017), National Hispanic Health Foundation Scholarship (2016), and United Health Foundation Diverse Scholar Award (2016), among others. Dr. Seija is a native of Austin, Texas and a proud Texan, earning his B.A. in Biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin and M.D. from Texas A&M University College of Medicine.
