The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center
Christen D Johnson, MD, MPH, was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. After a visit to an area urgent care, a 3 year old Christen found early that medicine had chosen her. Raised by a single mother, Christen attributes her success to the early lessons in work ethic and perseverance that her mother displayed. Christen graduated from Pickerington Central High School and went on to earn a Bachelors of Arts in Biological Sciences and a Certificate in African American and Women’s Gender Studies from Wright State University in 2012. She then completed a Doctorate of Medicine and a Masters of Public Health from the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University in 2017.
As a current Resident Family Physician with a love of serving the community and the science of medicine, Dr. Johnson’s professional interests include adolescent medicine, medical education, and public health policy. Dr. Johnson lives the phrase “To whom much is given, much is required” through her career in leadership and dedication to serving the most vulnerable communities. Her research interests have facilitated over 20 local, regional, and national research presentations, over 10 publications in peer-reviewed journals, textbooks, and grants. She has been honored with numerous scholarships and awards including the National Health Service Corps Scholarship and national recognition on Medscape.com, in the 2017 NBC Black 28 under 28, and as the 2019 Wright State University Graduate of the Last Decade.
Dr. Johnson has been heavily involved in the charge to diversify the face of medicine and making health disparities an issue of the past. She served as the 2016-2017 National President of the Student National Medical Association where she focused on health equity education, supporting minority medical students through mentorship and programming, and a novel research initiative on microaggressions in medical education.
Upon completing her residency, Dr. Christen Johnson will begin her career as a Family Physician serving the underserved in a federally qualified health center located in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Alongside continuing her research pursuits in making both medicine and medical education a more equitable place, she continues her path in physician leadership and currently holds positions on commissions that influence the practice of medicine through the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians, the National Medical Association, and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
