Manuel Tapia, MD, MPH is an Associate Clinical Professor in Family & Community Medicine (FCM) at UCSF School of Medicine. He was born and raised in San Jose, CA and is the first in his family to attend college. He is a proud product of the University of California system, receiving his undergraduate and medical degrees from UC Davis, a Masters Degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley, and completing his residency training in the UCSF San Francisco General Hospital Family and Community Medicine Residency Program.
His area of expertise is in Community Engagement and in the Development, Sustainability, and Evaluation of Pipeline, Outreach and Pathway programs for underrepresented groups in medicine. He is extraordinarily passionate about partnering with community to create and enhance opportunities for “home-grown” leaders to succeed in the health careers.
Dr. Tapia is a member of the Latinx Center Of Excellence Administrative Core Faculty and he serves as the Medical Director/Faculty Advisor for the student-run Clínica Martín-Baró. His clinical practice is based in primary care at Southeast Health Center, Bayview/Hunter's Point and he performs his teaching duties at San Francisco General with the Family & Community Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Tapia serves as the inaugural Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Oppression for the UCSF FCM department.
Dr. Tapia carries many roles dedicated to opening doors for diverse learners in medical education but his most cherished role is spending quality time with his wife Dr. Gisela Villagomez and his two young daughters Luna and Rubí.
