Ali Khan, MD, MPP, FACP works at the intersection of medicine, entrepreneurship, translational health policy, population health and public service to help transform American health care delivery and achieve the quadruple aim. He is an experienced leader of mission-driven teams through periods of growth, uncertainty and high-stakes challenges.
Ali currently serves as CareMore Health's Clinical Design Officer, where he directs national clinical program design, implementation and iterative innovation for CareMore's work with high need, complex and vulnerable populations across the United States. He previously directed clinical delivery, network operations, quality and outcomes for CareMore’s unique integrated payor-delivery system serving high-utilizer, vulnerable senior members across two counties in the Bay Area as Northern California Regional Medical Officer.
During his previous work at Iora Health, Ali served on the national clinical operations leadership team as Director of Physician Engagement and a clinical innovator. There, Ali led the strategic design and implementation of a variety of initiatives in population health, clinical quality improvement, clinical application product development and workforce development. As part of that work, Ali designed, conceived and co-directed the Iora/Dartmouth Fellowship in Primary Care Leadership + Innovation and the Iora/Primary Care Progress Academy in Primary Care Leadership + Innovation, both novel training pathways for medical trainees to obtain meaningful training in the management and leadership skills critical for success in health care transformation. On the basis of this work, he was honored as a 2015 California Healthcare Foundation Health Leadership Fellow and a MedTech Boston 40 Under 40 Healthcare Innovator.
A board-certified internist and Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Ali practices general internal medicine in both the primary care and inpatient settings, focused on the care of medically complex, highly vulnerable and high cost populations. His particular focus: the care for the super-utilizer urban underserved (in Richmond, Boston, New Haven, Las Vegas, San Francisco, San Jose and Chicago) in high-performing frontier health care delivery systems, drawing on experiences within leading academic medical centers, the Veterans Healthcare Administration, Kaiser Permanente and health care startups Iora Health and CareMore Health.
Ali completed his residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he serves on the clinical faculty. He is a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School and VCU’s Medical College of Virginia, earning joint MD and MPP degrees as a Harvard Public Service Fellow. As part of Virginia Commonwealth University’s joint BS/MD program, Ali graduated magna cum laude with University Honors in print journalism.
Beyond the clinic, Ali maintains an active public leadership portfolio, including recent service on the national boards of Doctors for America, the American College of Physicians, Physicians for Human Rights, the California Health Care Foundation Leadership Program and Virginia Commonwealth University, and as Chair of the ACP’s National Council of Resident/Fellow Members and of PHR’s National Student Advisory Board, respectively. As a member of the 2008 and 2012 National Health Policy Advisory Committees for Obama for America, Ali led, managed and trained physicians from around the country in political organizing, health policy education, messaging strategy and media cultivation. He previously managed field operations as National Deputy Field Director of Doctors for America and served as a health policy fellow at the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress under the former U.S. Assistant Surgeon General.
A former strategy consultant for the IHI, Ali provides strategic consulting and leadership coaching across the private, public and non-governmental sectors. He is a frequent invited speaker on domestic health policy and advocacy, change management, primary care innovation, health workforce issues, leadership development and health and human rights challenges nationally. He currently serves on national advisory boards for both Primary Care Progress and Costs of Care.
Beyond medicine, Ali’s community work includes ground-level service as a alumnus member – and past National President – of Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc., a national historically South Asian service and social organization.
