Dr. Dalmacio Dennis Flores is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania and will transition into an Assistant Professor position in July 2018. He is currently a board member of the National Association of Nurses in AIDS Care and sits on the Duke University Graduate School’s Board of Visitors.
Dr. Flores started his career as a bedside nurse in an inner-city hospital in Atlanta with his formative experiences at the bedside helping shape the research questions that he has been committed to answering through his work. His first study, “‘Get them while they’re young’: Reflections of young gay men recently diagnosed with HIV” was conducted two years after obtaining his BSN. He followed up this interest by pursuing a Master’s in Public Health Nursing Leadership at Emory University where he was a Robert Woodruff Fellow. While at Duke University for his doctoral training, Dr. Flores wrote and obtained NIH funding through a Ruth L. Kirschtein National Research Service Award. At Duke, he investigated the experiences of sexual minority males with parent-child sex communication. Dr. Flores arrived at Penn Nursing’s Research on Vulnerable Women, Children, and Families as a postdoctoral fellow while holding a concurrent fellowship at Yale University’s School of Public Health. He is currently investigating parent’s receptivity to inclusive sexual health communication with sexual minority youth for HIV and STI prevention.
Dr. Flores He has been a national spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and The Kaiser Family Foundation’s Greater Than AIDS Campaign. For his work in the Bridge to the Doctorate Program with students from Winston-Salem State University, he received the Duke Graduate School Dean’s Award for Excellence in Mentorship in 2016. Finally, in 2017, he received the Duke Alumni Affairs’ Forever Duke Student Leadership Award for meritorious service.
