Dr. Joneigh S. Khaldun is the Director and Health Officer for the City of Detroit Health Department and a board-certified practicing emergency physician at Henry Ford Hospital. As an appointee of Detroit’s Mayor Mike Duggan, she executes Detroit’s health agenda through collaborative partnerships, evidence-based programs, and a social justice lens. She previously served as Chief Medical Officer of the Baltimore City Health Department. In this role, she led opioid overdose response efforts, developed violence prevention strategies, worked with legislators on advancing innovative public health policies, and oversaw seven health clinics. Formerly, she served as the Director of the Center for Injury Prevention and Control at George Washington University, and was a Fellow in the Obama administration’s Office of Health Reform, working on an implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
Dr. Khaldun received her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Michigan and MD from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her emergency medicine residency at Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, New York, before attending George Washington University, where she completed her MPH and fellowship in health policy. With deep family roots on the east side of Detroit, Dr. Khaldun is a devoted wife and proud mother of three children.
