Dr. Carlos Stringer Smith, a Columbia, SC native, is an assistant professor in the department of general practice at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. He also serves as the school’s Director of Ethics Curriculum and as a clinical general practice group leader. Dr. Smith has practiced general dentistry for over a decade, with experience in both community dentistry and private practice. He is a graduate of Hampton University, the University Of Michigan School Of Dentistry and Duke Divinity School. Also an ordained pastor, Smith completed clinical pastoral education at Duke Medical Center providing pastoral care and counseling to families of pediatric and cardiac pediatric patients.
Dr. Smith maintains a private practice within the Dental Faculty Practice and is active in a variety of dental and dental education organizations including the Peter B. Ramsey Dental Society, the American Dental Association, American Dental Education Association and the American Society for Dental Ethics. He also serves on the Virginia Dental Association Foundation Board of Directors. He regularly volunteers for Give Kids A Smile, a national pediatric dental access event, and is passionate about issues of access to care and minority student recruitment initiatives. Dr. Smith provides formal mentorship to minority dental students through the Office of Health Sciences Diversity as well as pre-dental students from colleges and universities nationwide. His current research interests include dental ethics, oral health disparities and emotional resilience. He has published research articles in both the Journal of Dental Education and the Journal of Oral Health Management and will be a 2018 Fellow in the American College of Dentists. He serves locally as a member of the pastoral teaching team at Hill City Church and counts as his greatest joy being a husband to Heather and father to their daughters Savannah and Vivian.
