Understanding Genetic Kidney Diseases: Insights into APOL1

Understanding Genetic Kidney Diseases: Insights into APOL1

Dr. Egbuna will provide important insights into the genetic variants found in the APOL1 gene and how that genetic variant increases the risk of developing kidney disease and accelerates the progression of kidney disease, for people who identify as African American, Afro-Caribbean and Latin American.

In addition, Dr. Egbuna will highlight the disproportionate burden of kidney disease to communities of color and the challenges for those living with AMKD, including their progression to kidney failure often faster than those living with non-AMKD.

Kristen will highlight the important work of NephCure to engage and empower the patient community, particularly those who are from underserved communities, and will also discuss its Health Equity Initiative partnership, which focuses on creating interventions to prevent kidney failure and improve access to kidney disease research and care for communities of color.

Finally, Dr. Egbuna will highlight Vertex's commitment to

researching and discovering potential medicines aimed at treating the underlying cause of diseases such as AMKD.
