Dr. Martina T. Caldwell, MD, MS, FACEP, is a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician, health equity researcher, and Medical Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in the Department of Emergency Medicine in the Henry Ford Health System (HFHS), Medical Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the Henry Ford Medical Group, and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She earned a B.A. in Women’s Studies (Emory University in 2005), an M.D. (Yale University in 2010), and an M.S. in Health and Healthcare Research (the University of Michigan in 2016). She also completed her Emergency Medicine residency as Chief Resident in 2014 and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program in 2017 at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on emergency department (ED) interventions to improve reproductive health equity using community-based participatory research (CBPR), mixed methods, and implementation science. She is currently piloting a phase 1 behavioral clinical trial for the reproductive justice- and theory-informed Women & Person-Empowered Community Access for Reproductive Equity (WE CARE) intervention. Dr. Caldwell co-developed WE CARE with community partners Black Family Development, Inc., Alternatives for Girls, and Institute for Population Health. WE CARE provides reproductive-aged female patients with person-centered family planning, social needs, and preventative reproductive health services and referrals during and after ED visits using community health workers and an online tool called MyPath (www.mypathtool.org). She has led many DEI initiatives, including an ED Health Educator program, Underrepresented in Medicine Scholarship, Social Emergency Medicine Film and Discussion series, and ED DEI Culture and Climate Assessment. Dr. Caldwell has received numerous awards and grants, including the Health Disparities Research Collaborative Scholar, Physician-Scientist Track Award, Health Equity Scholar, and Diversity Hero Award, and serves on regional and national DEI and reproductive health committees.
